Why Hike Mill Creek Canyon (North Fork)

A hike along Mill Creek offers two very different experiences. The first short segment of the walk leads to a popular swimming hole at the lower end of the scenic canyon. Ledges offer perches for relaxing and basking in the sun. A waterfall cascading into the pool completes the scene. It’s a popular and crowded place on a warm day and justifiable so.

Beyond the first pool the scene changes markedly. We leave the crowds behind as the hike ascends along a perennial stream beneath towering sandstone walls. Alcoves and overhangs protect rock art panels and boulders etched with petroglyphs. A second pool offers a more secluded place to relax and cool off. Not many people venture past the second pool, so you will experience a sense of solitude that is lacking on many hikes near Moab.

Continue up the canyon as far as your time and energy allow. The canyon invites a relaxing pace. Climb along ledges, investigate interesting rock formation and explore alcoves and slots. As with all hikes around Moab, get an early start to finish before it gets uncomfortably warm for hiking.

Note: You will need to cross the creek occasionally. The water level varies depending on the season. You may be able to use rocks and/or logs to keep your feet dry. Alternatively you may find yourself wading. Plan accordingly.
