Why Hike Whiskey Mountain

A sustained climb up the southern slopes of Whiskey Mountain offers great views of the high peaks rising above the East and West Torrey Creek Valleys. After passing the junction with the trail to Ross Lake the path turns into a route, marked by posts and rock cairns, climbing through the vast meadows beneath the south facing slopes of Whiskey Mountain’s twin peaks. Amazing views encompass the stunning peaks and glacier-clad cliffs towering above the Ross Lakes basin.

The hike ends at the saddle between the two summits of Whiskey Mountains where vistas stretch from the Tetons in the northwest to the sea of peaks of the Absaroka Range to the north along with more fine views of the northern Wind River Range to the south/southeast. Peak baggers can extend the hike by summiting one or both of the Whiskey Mountain’s peaks.

The first two miles of this hike ascend exposed slopes with little or no shade. An early start is recommended to avoid hiking this segment of the trail during the hottest part of the day. The meadows and saddle of Whiskey Mountain can get quite windy and cool, so bring warm clothing. Keep your eye out for Big Horn Sheep that graze in the Whiskey Basin area in early summer and fall.

For parties looking for a shorter day, simply hike to the junction with the Ross Lake Trail at 3.4 miles and then wander through the meadows along Whiskey Mountain’s southern slopes as far as time and energy allow. The meadows feature great views of the high peaks of the northern portion of the Wind River Range.
